Today the class had Phy Ed. and music. Thanks to the students who remembered to bring in a picture of people doing something active for Phy Ed! In Music class, the students are listening to some songs from the musical West Side Story. I have them on my ipod too, so after music we listened to one of the songs after the class could give me the background of what was going on.

9-28-10

Today we went over our grades from our first Science unit about living things. I will keep these papers to show at conferences.

Tonight your child will bring home Spelling sentences that they worked on for the past two days. I would like someone to go over the sentences with them and correct any errors before they hand them in tomorrow. look for cursive errors, capitilization errors, punctuation errors, sentences that don't make sense, and sentences that need more details. They are not to start any of the sentences with the same word, they are in 5th grade and need to write more complex sentences.

Homework:

Spelling: study and get sentences corrected (they will be turned in tomorrow)

Phy. Ed: cut out or draw a picture of someone being active and bring it to class tomorrow

Social Studies: Get a current event and finish your Columbus map worksheet.

Today the class watched "A Cry in the Wild"-the movie version of Hatchet. I think it does a nice job of keeping true to the book. We will be talking about the smiliarities and differences between them soon.

Tomorrow is our field trip. It is supposed to rain on and off and be in the 60's. I recommend students to bring a rain poncho(you can get them cheap at Walgreen's) or to bring a large garbage bag to punch holes in as a makeshift one. They should also wear layers to keep warm. Wear shoes that can get wet, or wear rain boots. They can bring an extra pair of socks and shoes to change into later. Bring a plastic shopping bag to put your wet things in. Remember to bring a lunch if you didn't order one from school.

I gave out spelling lists today. They are stapled in agendas. I have three kids who do not have lists, they will work out of a workbook. I have a link on my blog to Spelling city. Today we had indoor recess for the first time in the afternoon. The kids did a great job behaving and having fun! We also helped out Mrs. Rajotte, a kindergarten teacher, color her wall alphabet. It saved her a lot of time, and we liked it because we don't get to color a lot!

I have been noticing a lot of kids who are not writing in their agendas. Please check on your child's agenda to see if they are writing in it. They should never leave anything blank!!!! I did write some notes in a few that were missing work, so double check for that too.

Homework:
If you do not have missing work, you have no homework! Have a great weekend!

I have had some questions about chaperoning the 1,000 Islands field trip on
Sept. 24th. I welcome any chaperones-but you will have to meet us there. We will be arriving at around 8:45-9. Students all have to ride the bus when going on a school field trip. Bring a lunch for yourself to eat, and you will be all set. Remember to wear boots that can get wet, if possible.

We started kids blogs today in computer time. I have a link to it on my blog. Right now, kids can only respond to my posts. eventually they will get to do their own pages. They have to login with their password # they use at school.

Today we started to work on posters that illustrate the 5 basic functions of living things. Students can choose a living thing to do their poster on, and then decide if they want to draw the pictures, print them off a computer at home, or cut out of magazines. Bring in any pictures by Friday so we can start our work!

Friday is our Hand in Hand Parent Orientation. The 5th grade session is from 8:25-9:35. Come a few minutes early to check in. Babysitting is available if you need it! I am hoping that each student willl either have a parent or another adult come to support them and learn about 5th grade. I have been going through different notes that were supposed to be handed in the first week of school. The ones I am missing I will re-hand out on Friday directly to the parents.

The class does have some homework tonight. Every Tuesday night the class will have to find a current even to bring in and share on Wed. This can be printed from the computer, cut out from a newspaper or magazine, or written down after watching the news on TV, or listening to the radio. It can be local, national, or world news. They should read over the article before Wed so they know what it is about. If they do not understand it, they should pick another. I will give initials on their incentive card for missing current events.

Also, if you have any copies of the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen at your house, please send them to school for your child to use. If you are at a book store and want to purchase one to donate to the class, that would be wonderful too! A lot of our copies have bit the dust. Book Orders

I handed out Sept. book orders yesterday. Today I am sending home a letter telling you how to order books online with your credit card. There is a one-time activation code to enter once you get to the scholastic site, and then you can make your own username and password that you can use all year long. Every book purchased online gets us a free book for the classroom library.

I do book orders once a month. This one is due Sept. 17th. If you would rather not use the online ordering, please use a check whenever possible made out to "Scholastic". It is easier for me, because with cash then I have to turn around and write a personal check.

Thank you!!!
